For those of you who are longer term members in the Critical Physiotherapy Network, you’ll know that we have been in a period of transition since all the original Executive members, including David Nicholls, stepped down from the leadership table. In recent months, we have spoken with many of you and are busy working through ideas you shared with us. Stay tuned for updates - coming very soon!
But first, one of those conversations gave us a moment of pause: many of you do not know who currently sits on the Critical Physiotherapy Network’s executive at present! How embarrassing.
So this and next week’s post, we will introduce ourselves.
Shelley Barlow, PhD:
I live and work in Northern New South Wales, Australia. I work as a clinician in a local hospital and in community health, and am training the 4th year students with their major academic piece at Gestalt Therapy Brisbane of the Brisbane Gestalt Institute, building on my Masters in Gestalt Therapy. My main theoretical interests are phenomenology, epistemic humility, medical humanities and the somatic manifestations of trauma and pain. I am interested in how psychotherapy can become part of physiotherapy practice in a way that is unique to physiotherapy.
Patty Thille, PhD
I work as a research-intensive Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Manitoba, in Treaty 1 territory of Canada. A physiotherapist by first degree and sociologist by PhD, my health services scholarship aims to disrupt stigma and discrimination in primary care and rehabilitation, particularly on the topic of bodily fatness and more recently, on chronic pain and opioid deprescribing. I approach this work using a range of qualitative methodologies and critical sociological and education theories. I have been affiliated with the Critical Physiotherapy Network from its early days, and am the lead editor on the forthcoming anthology of critical physiotherapy scholarship.
Adriane Vieira, PhD
I am an Associate Professor hailing from Brazil, affiliated with the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. My academic pursuits revolve around the domains of primary care, somatic education, planetary health, chronic pain, and theories of the body. My scholarly endeavors primarily involve dedicating myself to investigating how pragmatic sociology can contribute to our understanding of care within the realm of physiotherapy. I have been affiliated with the Critical Physiotherapy Network since 2015 and Environmental Physiotherapy Association since 2020.
Next week, part 2 of introductions.
