I’ve asked this question before—most recently in relation to the Environmental Physiotherapy Association Conference.
But it applies just as much to gatherings of the Critical Physiotherapy Network.
How can we meaningfully engage with issues like climate justice, decolonisation, or anti-capitalist critique, while continuing to fly around the world to attend conferences?
Isn’t there a contradiction between the values we promote and the practices we maintain?
Hi Steffen. I hear you on this. The CPN hasn’t hosted unique in-person conferences that require people getting onto airplanes. Instead, we add gatherings to conferences that are already happening (ie, preventing additional emissions). I appreciate that some avoid flying completely in all circumstances, but each makes their own judgment re: carbon emissions. CPN has long been, and will continue to be, a primarily virtual network, and in the next three months, we will be initiating a way for CPNers to share their work virtually, helping with knowledge sharing within.
Why is everyone still flying?
